Reading: Chapter 2 “The Thesis Statement”

Thesis: a statement that declares the main point or controlling idea of entire essay.

-It’s frequently located near the beginning of a short essay.

-Thesis answers questions: “What’s the subject?” “What’s writer’s opinion?” “What’s the purpose of essay?” (explain, argue, entertain)

-“Writing is an act of discovery.”

-A good thesis states the writer’s clearly defined opinion on some subject. It must tell reader what you think. It will be present specifically and precisely.

-If you’re having trouble writing a thesis, ask self: “Why it’s important?” “What’s so valuable?” “Most significant?” “Unexpected result of experience?”

-A good thesis asserts one main idea. It’s usually good to write thesis in one sentence but not required. A good thesis has something worth while to say. Try to select topic that’ll interest, amuse, challenge, persuade, or enlighten readers.

-A good thesis is limited to fit the assignment. Narrow subject matter to appropriate size. A good thesis is clearly stated in specific terms. Try to avoid words such as interesting, good, bad and etc.

-A good thesis is easily recognized as the main idea and is often located in the first or second paragraph. Remember: An essay is not a detective story, so don’t keep your readers in suspense until the last minute.

-Avoiding common errors:

1.) Dont make thesis merely an announcement of subject mater or a description of your intentions,

2.) Done clutter with expressions like “in my opinion” or “I believe” & “in this essay i’ll argue that…”

3.) Dont be unreasonable. Don’t insult any reader, avoid irresponsible charges, etc.

4.) Dont state a fact. A thesis is an assertion of opinion.

5.) Don’t express your thesis in form os a question.

-Using the essay map will allow the readers to know in advance where you, the write, will be taking them in the essay. The essay map often follows the thesis, but it can also appear before it. If you choose to use a map, always strive to blend it with thesis as smoothly as possible.
